Effortless Ways to Save Money at Home

During these troubled times a lot of people have been tightening their belts.  They no longer buy on a whim and think things a million times before making a purchase.  The wants are being pushed to the backburner so that the hard earned money will only go to the most basic needs.  Also, people have started to save more and are on the look out always on how to save money.

When before people usually saved whatever is left after their expenses, which was usually zero, people nowadays are more conscious of paying themselves first before using what is left over for their spending.  People now take more time to go through their budget to determine where to cut back on the expenses.

Saving money can be a very conscious effort, like enrolling your payroll account to auto deduct a certain amount of saving to a separate account however it can also be done in various ways.  Small saving ideas that when done regularly will turn out to be effortless.

A great way to effortlessly save money is to be conscious of the expenses at home.  The appliances often left on stand-by mode are eating on your electric bills.  The consumption of these appliances on stand-by may not matter much in a day but when you compute its consumption in a year, you will see that it all adds up to a whole lot of money.

Another often overlooked expense that eats up on the budget is food.  Wasted food that is.  Sometimes we tend to buy a little too much of food that we can’t really eat before their sell-by date and the tendency is that these foods usually go to waste.   What we should do is to take time to evaluate the family’s eating habits.  Stock up on foods that the family is fond of, buy in bulk basic food items like milk, sugar and cooking oil to name a few.  For other foods do not rank up in the family’s daily menu, it is better to buy in small quantities.  This way you will be able to save on the money that previously went to food spoilage.

One other tip that can be done at the home front is the use of the thermostat.  During the winter, used few more layer of clothing on you so that you don’t have to turn the thermostat one more notch than you should.  Also, its probably time you changed those light bulbs that you use, energy efficient light bulbs save a lot on energy cost.

There can be a lot of saving ideas that can be found at home, but you must take time and effort to examine your budget and expenses.  You may find that you are spending too much on things that are not really a necessity.

Money Saving Tips When Shopping for Home Appliances

Check for mail in and instant rebates. Many manufacturers, retailers, and state governments are offering rebates to entice customers into purchasing specific appliances. Appliance brands such as JennAir, GE, GE Monogram, and Thermador are offering attractive rebates that can save you thousands on a kitchen appliance package. Some are even offering free dishwashers with purchase of select appliances! State governments, for instance NJ, are offering mail in and instant rebates that can total up to 0. For especially keen savings, look for an appliance retailer that offers exclusive mail in rebates.

Look for package pricing. Many appliance stores, including Karl’s in New Jersey, offer special pricing when purchasing two or more appliances. Coupled with instant and mail in rebates this can add up to big savings of home appliances! Make sure you ask for package pricing if you think it may apply to your purchase…or maybe now is time to upgrade that other old appliance in your home too.

Sales taxes are ever increasing with some areas in the country at almost 9%. Often, if you purchase from an appliance store outside of the state you reside in you can avoid paying sales tax which can be a great way to save hundreds. Check your states laws however, as some if not all states require you to report the purchases you did not pay sales tax on and pay when filing your state income tax return.

Choose an appliance retailer wisely. You may get a great price but if the delivery is not what you need (some retailers will just drop an item at your curb), then the savings may cost you more in the long run. Karl’s Appliance, for instance, offers inside delivery (to at least a garage) nationwide and white glove delivery including removal of old disconnected appliances is standard locally in New York and New Jersey.

Save Money Cooling Your Home

Cooling a home during warmer months can be aggravating, especially when battling a tight budget.  Rather than getting hot under the collar when the electric bill arrives, keep your cool.  The following tips can alleviate the summer sizzle and help maintain a tight home cooling budget.

BATTEN DOWN THE TIGHT BUDGET HATCHES

Remember those movies in which sailors seal hatches to keep water from pouring into their storm struck ship?  Well, on a hot day, you’re the captain of the S.S. Tight Budget, and it’s your job to keep out warm air.  The same spaces that allow cold air to seep into homes during the winter, allow warm air inside during the summer.  It is therefore important to inspect the following areas:

* Window seals

* Doors

* Seldom used rooms

* Attic

* Basement

Holding a candle in front of windows or doors can detect airflow from cracks.  Caulking or sealing these spaces can decrease air seepage.  Also, consider partitioning areas that aren’t used frequently.  Closing doors and vents to unused rooms when cooling a home can make a difference of five to ten degrees or more.  Ensuring an attic is properly insulated can maintain a tight budget as well!

APPLIANCE RELIANCE

It is amazing just how much appliances can add to the temperature of a room or home.  Dishwashers, ovens, toasters, refrigerators, washers, and dryers all produce heat that can bust an already tight budget.  If it’s necessary to use these items when cooling a home, consider the following:

* Use a microwave instead of stove or oven for cooking

* Use appliances at night when energy rates are typically lower

* Use cold water to wash clothes

* Dry clothes outside

* Air dry dishes

* Vacuum refrigerator coils and vents every couple months

Don’t forget, even items such as televisions, lights/light bulbs, stereos, DVR and CD players emit heat that hurt your chances of cooling a home. These tips can decrease heat output as well as reduce energy costs for a tight budget.

A TIGHT BUDGET BUSTING DAY

Ambient light is a leading cause in increasing room temperature and can destroy any chance of cooling a home while abiding by tight budget constraints.  There are several ways to combat this solar foe.

* Close blinds/curtains on sunny days

* Plant trees/shrubs to block sunlight

* Use awnings

On the other hand, Mother Nature can be used to your advantage.  Opening windows allows breezes to cool a home and can be a great money saver.  Using fans to circulate air can save on a tight budget and be particularly helpful in cooling a home.

AIR CONDITIONING

If you are looking for a new air conditioner, bigger isn’t always better.  Larger units run for shorter periods and eat up more electricity when cooling a home. If you find it necessary to run an air conditioning unit, consider using a programmable thermostat. This can allow you to leave the air off, or set it at a higher temperature during times you are away, cooling a home on a tight budget more effectively.

How to Save Money on Home Energy Costs

Home energy costs can account for a huge piece of your monthly budget. There are a number of  easy things that can be done to save money on both your present and future energy costs.  Most are fairly inexpensive and quickly pay for themselves in lower home energy cost.

Instructions

1

Install a programmable thermostat and use it. Most of the newer thermostats allow you to set temperatures by the hour. Keep the heat considerably lower at night and while you are at work.

2

Close off unused rooms in your house. If your children are away at college or your guest bedroom is unused, you are wasting money by heating them. Close off the heating vents and close the door.

3

Insulate your attic and crawl space. Caulk around windows and doors. In thee winter months cover and insulate any air conditioners or unused outside vents.

4

Install low flow shower heads and faucet aerators. They not only will use less water but will save on the energy to heat the water.

5

Install compact fluorescent lights throughout your home. They save considerably on lighting costs and the newer ones mimic the light from conventional bulbs.

6

Install inexpensive foam draft seals behind all electric outlets and switches.

7

Purchase a smart power strip and use it for your home entertainment system or computer. Most electronic appliances use considerable electricty even when off. A smart strip will cut the power to all electronic components when one main appliance is turned off (as an example your television or computer).

8

If you heat with oil consider spot oil delivery as opposed to a contracted delivery service. Its a bit more work but the cost savings can be significant.

9

When replacing appliances shop for those with the highest Energy Efficiency Ratings.

10

Turn your water heating down to 120 degrees when at home and to it’s lowest setting when away.

11

Whenever possible wash clothing in cold water. The cost of heating the water is usually the greatest expense for a washig machine.

12

Battery chargers for cell phones, MP3 players, etc. are still using energy even when not charging. Unplug them after your compunent has reached a full charge.
